Badgers can dig faster than a person with a shovel, throwing dirt several feet in the air, and can even dig backward to disappear underground.
Their dens can be deep and have extensive tunnel systems. They often dig new tunnels daily.
They possess a nictitating membrane (third eyelid) to protect their eyes while digging.
