River otters bodies are designed for the water. Their webbed feet and powerful tail  propel them through the water at speeds up to 7 miles per hour. They are able to close their nostrils and ears underwater to stay submerged
They are highly social, often living in family groups led by a mother and her offspring.
They have a thick, water repellent coat of fur to keep them warm and dry. They can also see underwater due to a transparent third eyelid.
